Announcement of the decision in Newry came yesterday after representatives of the institution met local residents, district councillors and the Mediation Network on Thursday night. The meeting was seen as the first community forum held in Newry.
Agreement has been reached that the Sovereign Grand Master of the Institution, the former Ulster Unionist Party leader, Lord Molyneaux, will lay a wreath at the town's cenotaph in memory of those killed in the Omagh bombing and in other atrocities. The Newry Residents' Coalition has cancelled its protest planned for this afternoon as a reciprocal gesture.
