Champions-elect Bohemians will have to wait until the last game of the season to extend their points total after suffering a rare defeat at Flancare Park tonight.
The decisive breakthrough came in the 68th minute, Longford's Barry Ferguson converting from the spot after Eric Levine was adjudged to have been upended in the area, and the home side held on comfortably for three well deserved points.
In truth, it was a wonder neither side had found the back of the net before Ferguson's intervention with plenty of opportunities forged at either end.
Longford, to their credit, were more attack minded and enjoyed the clearer cut chances - only Brian Byrne will know how he managed to fire wide when a gaping net beckoned just after the break - and were well worth the victory on the night.
