Edinburgh - Lawyers for the Libyan agent found guilty of the Lockerbie bombing have lodged a formal appeal against his conviction, Scotland's High Court said yesterday.

"They have been lodged, but the papers are not open to public inspection," an official at the High Court of Justiciary in Edinburgh said.

Abdel Basset al-Megrahi was convicted at the end of January of the bombing of Pam Am Flight 103 over the southern Scottish town of Lockerbie. He was sentenced to life for the murder of the 270 victims with a recommendation that he serve at least 20 years in a Scottish jail.

The court official said a single High Court judge would now consider the grounds for appeal before deciding whether they merited a full hearing.
