English Premiership club Liverpool, due to play friendlies against Linfield and Dundalk early next month, are seeking advice on whether they should travel.

The Liverpool chief executive, Mr Peter Robinson, said: "This is something we will want to check out. Safety is of paramount importance and we will be taking soundings from our friends in the province."

The club's manager, Mr Roy Evans said: "There's still some time to go and we have a lot of supporters in Ireland. It's nice for them to get the chance to see us play and we've never had any trouble in the past. We've played at Linfield and Dundalk as well as elsewhere in Ireland many times over the years with no problems at all."

The recent violence forced Celtic to cancel a pre season game against Dundalk. Manchester United are reconsidering playing in Portadown.
