Lisbon vote date set for June 12th

The Lisbon Treaty referendum will be held on June 12th, it was formally confirmed today.

Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government John Gormley today made an order appointing June 12th as the polling day for the referendum on the proposal for the amendment of the Constitution contained in the Twenty-Eighth Amendment of the Constitution Bill 2008.

Polling will take place between 7.00am and 10.00pm.

Maurice Coughlan, a principal officer in the Department of the Environment, has been appointed returning officer for the referendum.

Every member of the electorate, which currently stands at 3,051,278, is entitled to vote.

Counting of votes will begin the following morning at various centres around the country.

The overall national result is expected to be announced that afternoon at the Central Count Centre in St Patrick's Hall in Dublin Castle.
