New York - An Irish singing star performed yesterday beside the wreckage of the World Trade Centre with composer Andrew Lloyd-Webber in a concert to support the bereaved families of the victims of the American terror attacks.
Shonagh Daly, from Limerick, joined Lloyd-Webber at Ground Zero for a multi-faith memorial ceremony, after being invited to the city by mayor, Mr Rudolph Giuliani.
The 21-year-old, who was discovered by the composer at an audition in Cork, performed a piece from the musical The Beautiful Game, written by Lloyd-Webber and the comic and author Ben Elton.
The musical is set against the background of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, with lyrics celebrating the heroism and optimism of ordinary people faced with the horrors of terrorism.
She was accompanied by Lord Lloyd-Webber on the piano to perform Let Us Love in Peace at the closing ceremony. World renowned opera singers American Renee Fleming and Italian Andrea Boccelli were also performing.
