Parts of the $50m film, Angela's Ashes, will be shot in Limerick, it was learned yesterday. Filming begins next month of the Pulitzer prize-winning book by Frank McCourt of his childhood experiences in the city before he went to the US.

It is understood filming will also take place at Carrigo gunnell Castle in Clarina, on the outskirts of the city.

The full cast has not yet been selected although it is believed the Full Monty star, Robert Carlisle, will play Frank McCourt's father, the main character in the film, and Emily Watson, who was nominated for an Oscar for Breaking the Waves, will play Angela.
