COMMUNITY GROUPS working in Limerick’s Moyross housing estate have urged anybody with information about the murder of an 18-year-old youth in the area to contact the Garda.

In a statement issued yesterday, Partners, the umbrella group representing 45 community and voluntary groups based in Moyross, condemned the killing of Darren Bennett earlier this week.

The 18-year-old was stabbed to death in a row outside a house in Craeval Park in the northside estate at 2am last Wednesday.

“We condemn this violent death unreservedly.

“Crime in Moyross has been reduced by 60 per cent over a 12-month period, but this one incident has made such a statistic irrelevant to the family concerned and to the victim’s friends,” the Partners statement said.

“We express our sympathies with the bereaved and share as a community in their tragic loss. Partners calls on every member of the community who can help the gardaí with their inquiries to do so,” the statement continued.

The scene where Darren Bennett was murdered remained cordoned off yesterday as searches for the weapon used in the fatal stabbing continued.

His removal will take place this evening at 8pm from Cross’s funeral home in Limerick to Corpus Christi Church in Moyross.
