Lightning struck the Government jet carrying the Taoiseach and 11 other people from Dublin to Belfast yesterday.

A Government spokesman said the Gulf Stream jet, with eight passengers, including Bertie Ahern, Fianna Fáil Galway East TD Noel Treacy, six officials and four crew, was on its final approach to Belfast City Airport when there was a "huge flash" and it was struck by lightning.

There were no injuries to passengers or crew and the jet landed safely. It was later checked by the crew to ensure no damage had occurred.
