Two people were rescued by lifeboat today after their vessel went aground on Lough Derg.

The Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat launched at 1.30pm following a request from Valentia Coast Guard to go to the assistance of a cruiser aground on Goat Road on the eastern shore of the lake.

Six volunteer lifeboat crew members went to the cruiser, which had been blown aground after suffering engine failure.

The wind was south westerly force 6, with visibility down to 400 metres with squalls, the RNLI said.

“The persons on board dropped anchor but was blown onto the shore by strong winds. Both persons on board were safe and unharmed.,” a spokeswoman for the RNLI lifeboat crew said.

The cruiser was taken off the rocks and towed into the harbour at nearby Kilgarvin and the lifeboat returned to station by 2.45pm.
