Each provisional licence is valid for two years.
Learners can drive for two years on a provisional licence which can be renewed for a further two years. To obtain a third or subsequent provisional licence, learners must take the driving test within the previous two years.
On a first, third or subsequent provisional licence, learners must be accompanied by a fully qualified driver. Oddly, on a second provisional licence they may drive unaccompanied.
All provisional licence-holders must display L plates.
