Leaving Cert students planning a holiday abroad after they get their results tomorrow have been warned to behave sensibly by Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern.

He said students were "entitled to celebrate and to relax and enjoy themselves" after their long years of study. But he said they can only do so if they are aware of the risks involved and act "sensibly and responsibly".

Every year, thousands of Irish students spend the summer after their Leaving Cert holidaying. Mr Ahern said the majority of these enjoy themselves, but some holidays end in tragedy.

"I have unfortunately been very aware of some holidays abroad having been ruined, and families suffering tragedy and trauma, because a small minority of young people did not act sensibly," he said,

He said students abroad should respect local laws and customs, and avoid excessive alcohol consumption and drugs.

In relation to water sports, no one should ever swim after consuming alcohol or food, he said, and students should obey safety rules and only swim or surf in areas patrolled by lifeguards.

The Minister also advised those travelling abroad to ensure their contact details are left with a family member; to take out adequate insurance; to carry a European Health Insurance Card; and to make sure they are aware of the nearest Irish embassy or consulate.
