A former businessman and president of Conradh na Gaeilge has died in a Dublin nursing home. Mr Liam O Luanaigh (83) was a leading figure in the motor industry and for many years was general manager of Irish Multiwheel Ltd. He was an active member of Craobh Moibhi de Chonradh na Gaeilge and was national president of the organisation between 1946 and 1949. He held the presidency of Comh dhail Naisiunta na Gaeilge (the co-ordinating body for the voluntary language organisations) 1961-64.
The government appointed him to An Coimisiun um Athbheochana na Gaeilge and An Coimisiun Ard-Oideachais in the late 1960s. Mr O Luanaigh was also a broadcaster and journalist. A Dubliner of Clare extraction, he was married in 1950 to Maire Ni Mhuiri, a teacher from An Cheathru Rua, and they had two sons, Liam and Paraic, and two daughters, Maire and Sile. His wife died a fortnight ago. Mr O Luanaigh was interned in the Curragh in the early years of the second World War and later in Arbour Hill Prison.
His funeral takes place today to Glasnevin Cemetery after 10 a.m. Mass in St Canice's Church, Finglas.
