Lawlor begins his second jail sentence

The Dublin West TD Liam Lawlor began his one-week sentence in Mountjoy Jail in Dublin today.

Lawlor was convicted by the High Court for failing to comply with orders from the Flood tribunal. He arrived at the jail shortly before 12 p.m. for processing.

Lawlor was driven into Mountjoy Prison in a police van evading reporters and photographers at the gates.

It is the second time Lawlor has been sentenced for his non-compliance with the Flood tribunal. In January, Lawlor served a seven-day term in Mountjoy and was fined £10,000 for his failure to co-operate with the tribunal.

Following his second conviction, the court ruled Lawlor was liable for all costs in his legal action against the tribunal leaving him with estimated total costs of £300,000 between the High Court and Supreme Court proceedings.

Lawlor was granted a stay on the jail sentence until today to allow him travel to New York for a Christmas holiday.
