Lara refuses to bend under pressure

Under-fire West Indies captain Brian Lara has insisted he will remain in charge until he is told otherwise.

Under-fire West Indies captain Brian Lara has insisted he will remain in charge until he is told otherwise.

His team were comprehensively beaten in the 256-run defeat by England in the second test at Edgbaston today after losing the first test at Lord's by 210 runs.

They also went down 3-0 in a home series against England earlier this year but Lara was defiant.

"It is impossible to even think about that (quitting) right now," he said.

"I have been given a job to do until the fourth test at the Oval and that is what I am going to do. My employers decide when I step down or if I continue or not."

Lara was criticised by former West Indies great Viv Richards for lacking leadership before the defeat on Sunday. He has already left the captain's job once but returned for a second stint in 2003.

"I am always committed to West Indies cricket," he added. "I have been asked back to do this job and have been doing the best I can."

West Indies' only victory in their last 11 tests came against Bangladesh in June.
