Lane closures take their toll on M50 traffic

Two lanes of the M50 extending from the West-Link toll plaza are currently closed and affecting traffic on the motorway.

The southbound outside lane on the M50 is shut from the toll plaza to the Ballymount interchange due to upgrading work on the road.

The road is expected to be closed until 6am on Saturday, August 23rd. Motorists are advised to expect some delays and to heed the temporary diversion signs.

The right lane of the M50 northbound is also closed until tomorrow from the J9 Red Cow exit to the toll plaza for works.

Two lanes of traffic remain open along this stretch of road. The AA reports that traffic is moving slowly on the northbound lane.

According to the AA, a broken down truck on an internal road at Dublin airport is blocking a lane, and traffic is very slow, tailing back to the M1 airport roundabout.

In other M50 news, the National Roads Authority (NRA) yesterday said drivers will face "teething problems" over the removal of the West-Link toll plaza and introduction of electronic tolling this moth.

The plaza will not be entirely removed until next October at the earliest, while motorists will be asked to convert to electronic payment methods by August 30th.

Dismantling of the toll plaza also means congestion is likely to get worse in the short term. New diversions through the plaza will be put in place, and speed will be restricted during demolition works.

According to the NRA, it will be several weeks before M50 users settle into a normal pattern and 2010 before the full benefits of the electronic tolling scheme are realised.
