The Labour Party in Cork yesterday selected Ms Sheila O'Sullivan to contest the next general election in Cork North Central.

The Cork county councillor will join a former TD, Ms Kathleen Lynch, on the party ticket. Ms Lynch has already been selected by Democratic Left, and Ms O'Sullivan said yesterday that the merged party would offer a unified voice.

She said she would prefer to have been the only candidate, but that she could work with Ms Lynch.

Ms O'Sullivan defeated the trade unionist and former Cork lord mayor, Mr Joe O'Callaghan, by 34 votes to 19 at the selection convention yesterday. She has been a member of the council since 1991.
