Berlin - The former German Christian Democrat chancellor, Dr Helmut Kohl, fighting for his honour in Germany's slush-fund scandal, denied yesterday that the late French president, Francois Mitterrand, sank money into his 1994 election bid at his behest.

Meanwhile Dr Kohl's party, the CDU, suffered a painful defeat yesterday when it lost the Saale-Orla seat in the Thuringia state parliament seat in eastern Germany.

Dr Kohl flatly denied French and German media reports that Mitterrand relayed millions into his CDU party campaign coffers as part of a $2.6 billion takeover of an east German oil refinery by the state-owned French Elf Aquitaine.
