Seoul - North Korea has formally confirmed Mr Kim Jong-Il as supreme leader in its most dramatic political shake-up in decades, which also strengthened the military's role in the state.
Mr Kim (56) was re-elected chairman of the state's highest body, the National Defence Commission (NDC), as parliament significantly increased his powers on Saturday - finally completing the communist world's first dynastic succession.
However, it failed to name Mr Kim president as many had expected.
