A Circuit Court judge has said that the death of a security guard during a robbery on Tuesday night was "horrific" and it was a terrible tragedy that the man was killed while carrying out his duty.

Judge Kieran O'Connor made his comments as two trials were postponed because stenographers were forbidden by a Garda forensics team from passing through the crime scene.

Judge O'Connor apologised to the jury at the trial of Mr Patrick Corbally (44), of Drumfinn Avenue, Ballyfermot, who is charged with possession of a firearm and ammunition.

A robbery had occurred in Francis Street and during it a security guard had been killed with a stolen car and a garda seriously injured.

The jury would know from Mr Corbally's trial how gardai examine a crime scene, Judge O'Connor added.

He said gardai from the Bridewell station had told him it would be well past lunchtime before the scene would be cleared by forensic experts.

The scene was next door to a firm which provides stenographers for the courts, and they were not allowed to collect their stenography equipment.

The accused nodded as he was told to return to the court tomorrow.

The trial of Det Garda John Ryan (36), of Newtown Park, Blessington, Co Wicklow, charged with obtaining money by false pretences, was also postponed.
