More than a thousand people have held a march in the Co Mayo town of in protest at the
proposed siting of an asbestos recycling plant outside the town.
The crowd marched from the town to the site of the plant on the Ballina Road proposed
by the company Irish Environmental Processes (IEP). The firm says its operations there can be run
without any danger to public health.
However, Independent Mayo TD Dr Jerry Cowley told the rally he had treated people exposed to
asbestos and twenty years later they have cancer of the lung directly as a result of that exposure.
