A Co Kildare man was charged at a special sitting of the Special Criminal Court yesterday with conspiring to cause an explosion earlier this year.

Mr John McNamara (36), a builder of Courtown Park, Kilcock, was charged with conspiring with a person or persons not before the court to cause an explosion likely to endanger life in the State or elsewhere, on a date between March 19th and April 2nd.

Det Supt Noel White said Mr McNamara was arrested at his home at 6.55 a.m. last Saturday under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, for possession of explosives at Dun Laoghaire on April 2nd.

He said Mr McNamara was released from the Section 30 arrest at 6.54 a.m. yesterday.

Det Supt White said he arrested Mr McNamara at 6.58 a.m. at Main Street, Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, under the Criminal Law Act of 1997. He said he told Mr McNamara that on the directions of the Director of Public Prosecutions he would be brought before the Special Criminal Court and charged.

Mr McNamara was remanded in custody until October 8th.
