A renewed request by Clare County Council for temporary use of Kerry's licensed landfill site may meet with more favourable consideration by councillors this time, it was indicated yesterday. A meeting of both counties' Strategic Policy Committees took place in Tralee on Monday evening.
However, residents of the north Kerry Muingnaminnane area where the Environmental Protection Agency licensed landfill is located, are objecting to increased traffic and rubbish in their locality. They are threatening to mount a series of protests, especially, they say, because there is "a very real prospect" Clare will never have a licensed landfill of its own, said spokesmen for the residents.
In November, Kerry county councillors rejected Clare's request for access to the north Kerry landfill, even though Kerry agreed in principle under a joint regional waste management plan with Limerick and Clare to accept the latter's waste when the Doora site closes in June.
