Councillors in Kerry are insisting that council management give them details of of the county’s refuse collection service, which has been sold for an undisclosed price. Some 7,000 customers in Co Kerry are being transferred to Killarney Waste Disposal (KWD) with the decision to get out of what was a heavily subsidised service, the council’s monthly meeting was told.
County manager Tom Curran said waste management was “an executive function” under the Waste Management Amendment Act 2011, meaning the decision was for him and not councillors. He said he took the decision with regret after a review. He had signed a contract with KWD to take effect from December 5th. Staff would be redeployed and not lose their jobs and current collection routes would obtain until February 2013 under the deal.
