Taoiseach Enda Kenny has thanked the Irish people for their "courage" and "sacrifice" under difficult circumstances and said that signs of economic recovery show that Ireland is heading in the "right direction".
In his Christmas message to the nation, Mr Kenny said he recognises the difficulties being faced by many and said he acknowledges that people are questioning how much more they can give.
“I know that times are tough for many of you at this time. And, in the huge sacrifices that you are making, you are wondering how much more you can take – how much more you can give.
"As your Taoiseach, I hear you give that message very clearly."
Mr Kenny said that as a husband, a father and a neighbour, he feels “deeply” for the people.
“I feel especially for those of you with young children – the faithful letter-writers to the North Pole – who are counting the sleeps to the big man on the big day,” he said.
“That’s why the Government is keeping faith with you. We are working day and night to get our country back on its feet, to create jobs and opportunities that will get our people home and keep them home so that together that we can build a better and richer future for all our families,” he said.
Mr Kenny said signs of economic recovery are slowly emerging.
“Thanks to your courage, your sacrifice, we are already making good progress. Slowly but steadily our economy is recovering. Investment in critical jobs are returning.
“They are small signs but they are vital signs. And, they show that at last that Ireland is heading in the right direction.
“After difficult years new economic life is stirring. Indeed, that’s what Christmas is all about: New life – when the Christ child comes to bring peace and joy and hope to the world.
“So, as we celebrate this great tradition, this great time of hope and possibility, I wish you all a very happy and a peaceful Christmas in the company of your family your friends and your loved ones,” he said.
