The Sinn Féin junior minister in the last Northern Executive Gerry Kelly was injured yesterday when he became caught up in the aftermath of a suspected robbery in south Belfast.

Mr Kelly was driving from a council count at Belfast City Hall to pick up children for a dentist’s appointment when his car was struck by another car on a slip road of the M1 at Stockman’s Lane, according to a Sinn Féin spokesman.

“The car struck the back of his car and then scraped along the side of his car. It then hit three other cars,” added the spokesman. Police said the suspected getaway car also struck a police vehicle.

The incident happened following a robbery of a shop on the Lisburn Road about 2.40pm.
