Kells Urban District Council is to continue its campaign to have the Book of Kells displayed in the town's new heritage centre. At a special meeting on Monday the council decided to seek the appointment of an arbitrator and to resubmit its request to Trinity College Dublin.
Last week the board of TCD voted against the temporary display of a volume of the book in the Co Meath town on security grounds. Security measures agreed between Trinity and the council were outlined at the special meeting. The measures included a 24-hour armed Garda presence. The council said Garda security experts had examined the heritage centre and found it suitable to house a national treasure. The cost of additional security and environmental features would have been close to £200,000.
