Brian Kearney has lodged notice of his intention to appeal against his conviction for the murder of his wife at their home in south Dublin two years ago.
Kearney (51) was found guilty at the Central Criminal Court earlier this month of strangling his wife Siobhán (38) at their home at Knocknashee, Goatstown, on February 28th, 2006.
He strangled her in her room, then used a vacuum cleaner flex as a ligature before trying to hoist her over the en-suite door in her bedroom in an attempt to make it look like a suicide. Their three-year-old son was downstairs at the time.
The jury of eight women and four men took five hours and 24 minutes to reach their verdict by a majority of 11 to one. He was given a mandatory life sentence.
A Courts Service spokesman said solicitors for Kearney lodged notice of appeal with the office of the Court of Criminal Appeal over the Easter period. However, the grounds for appeal were not specified in the application.
Due to a backlog of cases, it is expected the case cannnot be heard for at least six months.
