Terry Venables got one over on another former England boss Kevin Keegan as his new club Leeds made a winning start in the Barclaycard Premiership against Manchester City.

It was Nick Barmby, Venables' first buy for Leeds, who opened the scoring on his debut in the 15th minute on the way to a 3-0 win for the Yorkshire side.

City went close through Sun Jihai and Nicolas Anelka but their failure to take chances cost them as Mark Viduka added a second on the stroke of half-time.

Chances continued to come the way of the Blues, but they could not make any of them count and Robbie Keane sealed the win for Leeds with 10 minutes to go.

Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri had already written off his side's title chances before this match, but they showed their fighting qualities to fight back from 2-0 down to Charlton to win 3-2.

The first goal came from Charlton's England Under-21 full-back Paul Konchesky in the seventh minute, and was the first of the season to be scored in open play. However, Konchesky went from hero to villain when he was sent off after half an hour for violent conduct.

The numerical disadvantage did not faze the Addicks, who doubled their lead through centre-back Richard Rufus.

But the Blues grabbed a lifeline two minutes before the break when Gianfranco Zola applied a first-time finish to Boudewijn Zenden's cut-back.

They drew level with six minutes left, young striker Carlton Cole getting the better of Rufus and though he did not catch his shot too well it was good enough to beat Dean Kiely. The turnaround was complete when Frank Lampard slotted a low shot past Kiely for an unlikely winner with a minute to go.

Premiership newcomers West Brom held Manchester United for 78 minutes before Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finally broke through for Alex Ferguson's side. The Baggies looked set for a point despite having Derek McInnes sent off for a terrible tackle on Nicky Butt.

The Baggies conceded just 29 league goals in winning promotion to the top flight last season, and United found them just as difficult to break down but finally Norwegian super-sub Solskjaer, as so often in the past, saved United's blushes. Jason Roberts almost put Albion ahead in the first half but Roy Carroll made a near-post save for United to deny him.

Bolton striker Michael Ricketts banged in the first goal of the Premiership season - his first in 18 games - when he tucked in a fourth-minute penalty against Fulham, who were making their debut at their temporary home, Loftus Road.

However, the lead lasted only seven minutes as Louis Saha was tripped in the box by Gudni Bergsson and the Frenchman picked himself up to convert the spot-kick. Sylvain Legwinski then gave the Cottagers the lead in the 33rd minute before referee Alan Wiley awarded a third penalty five minutes later, this time Steve Marlet the man who scored it.

Legwinski grabbed his second of the match, having already scored twice in Fulham's Intertoto Cup campaign, to put the gloss on a 4-1 win.

Everton's 16-year-old striker Wayne Rooney made an instant impact on his Premiership debut against Tottenham, laying on a pass for Mark Pembridge to put the Toffees 1-0 up at the break. The youngster was a constant threat to Glenn Hoddle's side but could not find the net, and Spurs pulled level after 62 minutes when midfielder Matthew Etherington drove in a shot off the underside of the crossbar.

Les Ferdinand then put Spurs ahead but David Moyes' side battled back and Tomasz Radzinski levelled the scores in the 81st minute.

There were no goals in the games between Blackburn and Sunderland, and Southampton and Middlesbrough.
