Robbie Keane is determined to follow Michael Owen's example and silence the critics who say he has lost his goalscoring touch.

The Republic of Ireland striker failed to hit the mark again last night in his fourth match for Tottenham since his Stg£7 million move from Leeds in August.

And as Keane missed chance after chance it was lucky for Spurs that skipper Teddy Sheringham hit the target with the first-half effort that saw off Second Division leaders Cardiff in the Worthington Cup.

But Keane insists that the barren run is nowhere near effecting his confidence in front of goal.

He said: "I'm confident enough. In fact I feel very confident, to be honest with you. I know that one day all the chances like the ones I had against Cardiff will go in."

Keane has attracted favourable comparisons with Liverpool and England ace Owen - especially when playing for the Republic of Ireland - and he believes he will emerge from his current drought in spectacular style, just like Owen did against Manchester City last Saturday.

He added: "I don't know about a hat-trick, but I know that on another day I'm going to put chances away. Strikers have to keep that belief. What would really worry us is if we were not getting the positions to miss.

"I'm not worried at all. Everybody wants to score as many goals as they can and I'm no different but you are going to have dry spells now and again. What is important then is that somebody else scores and the team wins.

"That's how it was against Cardiff, who made it hard for us on Tuesday night, but we got the result and that's what matters."
