Fifth seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov became the lastest top name to be knocked out of Wimbledon today.
The Russian was beaten in the third round by Belgium's 27th seed Xavier Malisse 7-6 (7/4), 7-5, 6-1 who will now face either Britain's Greg Rusedski, seeded 23, or America's Andy Roddick, the 11th seed, for a place in the quarter-finals.
Serena Williams, the women's second seed, struggled into the fourth round with a 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/2) win over Belgian qualifier Els Callens.
Williams goes on to meet fellow American Chanda Rubin for a place in the quarter-finals for the third straight year.
Jennifer Capriati, the third seed from the United States, advanced with a straight sets 6-4, 6-2 win over Czech Daja Bedanova, the 26th seed.
Capriati advances to face Eleni Daniilidou of Greece for a place in the quarter-finals for the fifth time.
Australian wild card Mark Philippoussis stayed on course in his bid to emulate Goran Ivanisevic's achievement a year ago by booking a place in the fourth round at the expense of Germany's Nicolas Kiefer.
The 25-year-old Philippoussis, who has come back from an injury-ravaged three years, came away a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 winner in 2hrs 17 minutes against his unseeded German opponent.
Philippoussis next meets former champion Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands, who ended the dream run of Thai hope Paradorn Srichaphan, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4, 6-2, for a place in the quarter-finals.
Earlier Yugoslav Jelena Dokic, American Chanda Rubin and Slovak Daniela Hantuchova powered their way into the women's fourth round in straight sets.
