THE 1,500 names contained in the controversial Price Waterhouse report will be examined by Judge Gerard Buchanan as part of the agreement reached between the Government and Dunnes.
Judge Buchanan, who retired from the Circuit Court last year, will extract the names of serving and former politicians and give them to the Ceann Comhairle, Mr Sean Treacy.
Judge Buchanan had close links with Fianna Fail before his appointment as a judge.
He founded the party's cumann in Rathgar, Dublin, served for a period on the national executive and stood in the 1973 general election for Dublin South Central.
He is a member of a distinguished Church of Ireland family. His cousin, Dr Alan Buchanan, is a former Archbishop of Dublin.
Born in 1926 he was educated at Sandford Park School, where fellow pupils included Dr Conor Cruise O'Brien. He studied law at Trinity College, from which he graduated with a first class honours degree and was called to the Bar where he had an extensive practice.
He served with the Local Defence Force during the second World War. He was actively associated for many years with the Church of Ireland and was a prominent figure at its annual synod.
He maintained a keen interest in the North and admired the Northern policies of two former Taoisigh, Sean Lemass and Jack Lynch.
His parents are from Northern Ireland.
