The trial of the only man charged in connection with the Omagh bombing was postponed until after Christmas today after one of the judges fell ill.

Mr Colm Murphy

Justice Mary O'Halloran SC was admitted to hospital over the weekend forcing the Special Criminal Court trial of Colm Murphy (49) into an adjournment until the start of next year.

Mr Murphy, from Dundalk, Co Louth, denies conspiring to cause an explosion within the state or elsewhere likely to cause loss of life or serious injury to property in February 1998.

Presiding judge Mr Justice Barr SC told the Dublin court that the trial would have to be adjourned until January 11th.

Mr Justice Barr and Joseph Matthews SC had sat alongside Justice O'Halloran in the case for the past 22 days. The Special Criminal Court sits without a jury.

Mr Murphy left the court with a large family group, which has sat in the public gallery throughout the trial.

He remains on continuing bail of £50,000, supported by two further sureties totalling another £50,000.
