The same Wineport Restaurant has just introduced a typically thoughtful new afternoon bar menu, designed for travellers heading from Dublin to Galway (or heading from north to south) who want good food in a beautiful setting as a respite from the road. The Wineport is only five minutes' drive from the Athlone Relief Road, and offers smoked seafood chowder with fresh breads, Westmeath beef sandwich with horseradish mayonnaise, chicken wings with fried Glasson mushrooms, ripe farmhouse cheeses with water biscuits, fried calamari and steamed mussels, and desserts such as chocolate brownie with hot fudge sauce and creme brulee with orange caramel ice cream. All this, and you can sit there and peer out at the water, and watch the waterbound travellers tyeing up and coming in to have some food along with you. The menu is offered from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m, Monday-Saturday.
The restaurant is on the waterside at Glasson, Athlone, Co Westmeath: tel: 0902-85466.
