Boris Johnson's lead in the London mayor opinion polls has narrowed but remains in double figures over his nearest rival.

The Conservative candidate was two points down at 47 per cent, while Labour's Ken Livingstone was static on 37 per cent, the joint Evening Standardand ITV London Tonight poll showed.

Liberal Democrat Brain Paddick was on 10 per cent, and the Greens' Sian Berry on 2 per cent.

Mr Johnson's campaign is focusing on fighting crime and violence. He wants to beef up the powers of community support officers and use more CCTV on buses as well as put more police on public transport.

Mr Livingstone claims crime levels have dropped 25 per cent overall in five years. He has promised an extra 1,000 police during the next year and to maintain a police team in every neighbourhood.

Mr Livingstone unveiled his housing manifesto this week in which he pledged to build a minimum 50,000 new affordable homes in the next three years.
