THE FOLLOWING statement was issued by the dioceses of Killala and Armagh in response to John's case – details of which were first published in yesterday's Irish Times:
“The complaints . . . are being disputed by the priests against whom the allegations have been made. These complaints are now the subject of police investigations . . .
“As Church leaders, we acknowledge our Christian responsibility to respond to all allegations of abuse while maintaining due regard for the rights of all concerned. We undertake this responsibility out of a concern for justice, in a spirit of compassion and with a desire to bring about healing in such situations.
“To respond pastorally to the complainant Church authorities have been in constant communication with him over the last five years. This contact has been led principally by the Bishop of Killaloe. Church support has included meetings with the complainant to listen to and understand his concerns.
“Support has also been provided in the form of professional counselling, assistance in the renewal of work skills and by way of a number of financial contributions. We are committed to protecting all those who are vulnerable and who have suffered in a Church context.”
