THE HOME of the late American billionaire John Paul Getty III, Gurthalougha House in Co Tipperary, has been sold to an international buyer with Irish connections.

It is understood the house, just outside the village of Ballinderry, was sold through agent Knight Frank for a sum close to the latest asking price of €2.45 million.

Getty lived on and off on the 100-acre lakefront estate overlooking Lough Derg, Co Tipperary, with his mother, Gail Harris Getty, until his death in February last year.

He was heir to one of the world’s great fortunes, but famously found neither health nor happiness in life. John Paul Getty III was grandson of the late oil baron and billionaire Paul Getty who founded Getty Oil, once one of the world’s richest men.

The house was first bought by the Getty oil dynasty in 1998 and the recent sale was closed by the family trust at the end of September. Getty and his mother put the house on the market in 2010 for €5.2 million.

The new owner is expected to carry out some refurbishment.

The Victorian lodge is a short boat ride from the village of Terryglass. The house itself, which covers almost 8,000sq ft, was extensively refurbished by the Getty family. It comes with a private harbour, fishing rights and numerous woodland walks.
