Joe O'Toole's tenure assessed by delegates

Paula Kelly, Dublin delegate: A man among men. We will never see his like again. Preferred successor: a woman

Paula Kelly, Dublin delegate: A man among men. We will never see his like again. Preferred successor: a woman. Generations of women have taught for this country. It's about time we had a woman leader.

Breedge Conway, Dublin City Centre delegate: He is very good overall, with a great turn of phrase. He is a man with a mission. The outstanding moment for me was his interview with David Hanly on Morning Ireland where David collapsed laughing.

Preferred successor: my preferred choice would be Noel Ward. He has the ability.

Kieran Griffin, Bray delegate: He has done this union some service. He has done for Shannon navigation what Columbus did for the Western world.

Preferred successor: time for a woman.

Deirdre Ni Bhroin from Carlow, Dublin delegate: The thing that stands out about him is his tweed jackets. Preferred successor: someone left-wing. It'd be nice to see a woman up there.

Diarmuid O'Connor, Newbridge delegate: I think he's been the outstanding trade unionist in Ireland over the last 10 years. He has given us unparalleled influence in the Seanad and the Dail. I quote Lyndon Johnson: "I'd rather have him in my tent pissing out than outside my tent pissing in."

Preferred successor: must be someone who feels that parity of treatment of teachers in Irish society is the issue.

Joe Hartnett from Cork, Newbridge delegate: so media friendly he's unnatural. Whether that has been good for the INTO is up for debate. He's had a profile that no INTO leader has ever had before, which probably means he has highlighted issues. But he sometimes leaves the membership wondering. He's articulate, intelligent, the darling of the media.

Preferred successor: Tom O'Sullivan - a grassroots person.
