Ulsterman John Reid has announced his retirement from horse racing after an illustrious career spanning 28 years.
Reid won a staggering 48 Group 1 races and recorded his most notable success in 1992 when guiding Dr. Devious to victory in the Epsom Derby.
Five years earlier, he won the Irish equivalent at the Curragh aboard the Barry Hills-trained Sir Harry Lewis.
Reid (46) revealed today he had been planning to retire for some time. "The time was right I think," he said.
"I've been thinking about it, and it's always been a plan of mine to stop around the age of 45 since a long time ago.
"I got past that and, of course, started thinking about it and when you start thinking about retiring you ought to quit, I think," he said.
