An exciting week of jazz includes the visit of the outstandingly adventurous American soprano saxophonist, Dave Liebman, for the Improvised Music Company.

Liebman, who numbers Miles Davis and Elvin Jones among his stellar past associations, has for long been at the cutting edge of jazz with his own groups, among them Lookout Farm, Quest and Open Sky Trio. Anyone who heard his recent performances on Florian Ross's orchestral pieces for Naxos will acknowledge the work of a master improviser. He was last heard there almost three years ago, when he performed at the Dublin Jazz Week, premiering Ronan Guilfoyle's Music for sporano saxophone and string quartet and improvising over Samuel Barber's Adagio. Tomorrow he plays at Whelans with old friends in the Guilfoyle-Nielson Trio.
