WHAT to wear? Where to party? How to get there? Decisions, decisions, decisions! A number of people try to focus on these worrisome issues at a party in Dublin Castle to celebrate the arrival of the MTV Europe Music Awards. It's not all fun and games, you know.

Brent Hansen, a rangy New Zealander, is head of MTV Europe. Londoner Richard Godfrey is executive producer of the two-hour television show. Both are clear about what to wear to the mega event. "We'll all be in jeans or naked," says Godfrey. Black leather is out for them, they say. Yeah, it's soooo five minutes ago?

2FM DJ Tony Fenton says that black is always a safe bet. "After all it's a rock gig, girl," he says.

Lainey Keogh plans to wear "something that will evoke the spirit of the Irish feminine". The Irish feminine what? "Feminine - that's a noun. It means the Irish woman." Under the blue and lilac strobe lights the Irish designer is in soft focus with a lavender fox fur collar around her neck. The woollen skirt wrapped around her lower half features the myriad eyes of a peacock's tail. "It helps me not to be naked," she explains helpfully.

Gerry Ryan and wife Morah are dashing out the door, getting home to feed their two-week-old baby. She's going to be called Babette, they say. Whatever about themselves going to the Point, their 14-year-old daughter, Charlotte, is going to the MTV show. And who is to accompany this young, impressionable girl, we inquire solicitously because, well it's important to know these things. "She's going with her nanny," offers Ryan, with a cheeky grin. And, so, it's on with the show.
