Israeli soldiers fired today at a vehicle carrying employees of Jordan's representative office in Gaza, but no one was hurt, Jordan's ambassador to the Palestinian Authority said.

An Israeli military source voiced regret at the incident. He said the soldiers opened fire after a grenade was thrown at an army checkpoint near the Erez border crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip about the time the car passed by.

"It's possible the Jordanian car was caught in the crossfire. There was no intention to hit the Jordanian car," the source said.

Ambassador Mr Goma al-Abadi said the car made a high-speed dash to safety after the shooting erupted.
