The Israeli military said soldiers were searching the area for suspects, declining to give further details.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility.

The attack occurred at a time of rising tensions after clashes between Palestinian worshipers and Israeli police last week at a sensitive religious site in Jerusalem.

It also comes at the time of a peace push by President Barack Obama, whose envoy, George Mitchell, will hold more talks this week with Israelis and Palestinians for a possible resumption of stalled peace negotiations.

The last shooting attack in the West Bank took place on August 12th when armed Palestinians shot and wounded two Israelis driving near a Jewish settlement.

Violence often has broken out between settlers and Palestinians in the West Bank, where 300,000 Israelis live among 2.5 million Palestinians on land captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war.
