An Israeli was killed and two others were wounded in an apparent Palestinian mortar attack in central Gaza today, an Israeli security source said.
No immediate comment was available from the Israeli army on the reported incident near the Jewish settlement of Kfar Darom.
Tensions rose in the West Bank and Gaza today, with thousands of Palestinians vowing to support attacks in Israel in revenge for an Israeli missile strike yesterday that killed a leader of the militant Hamas group.
Palestinian security sources said three Israeli tanks entered Palestinian-ruled areas to the east and south of Deir el-Balah near Kfar Darom and fired four shells.
They said two Palestinians were wounded in the military action.
The violence is certain to complicate a new US mission designed to end 14 months of Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Former US Marine Corps General Anthony Zinni and Assistant Secretary of State William Burns are due to arrive in the region on Monday.
