Jerusalem - Israel's highest court yesterday said that two lesbian partners can both be the legally registered mothers of the same child. An ultra-Orthodox politician accused the judges of imposing standards like those in the biblical city of Sodom.
The supreme court ordered the government to recognise both the biological mother of four-year-old Matan, Ms Ruti Berner-Kaddish, and her lesbian partner, Nicole, as the parents. "Biologically it is impossible, but legally there is no obstacle to having two mothers," their defence lawyer remarked.
