An Irishman has been elected the new head of an international transportbody, the Minister for Public Enterprise Mrs O’Rourke announced today.
Mr Jack Short from Cork will take up the post of Secretary General of the European Conference of Ministers of Transport.
Based in Paris, the ECMT has 40 full member countries from Europe and a number of associate members, including the US, Japan, Australia and Canada. The body conductsresearch and policy debate on transport issues.
It is currently engaged in formulating sustainable urban transport policies and integration of central and Eastern European countries into the international transport market.
Mr Short formerly served in the Departments of Finance and Transport, before joining the ECMT in 1984.
"This is a great honour for Ireland," Mrs O’Rourke said.
