A garden inspired by the Irish countryside today won a Gold award in this year's Chelsea Flower Show.

Tearmann si - a Celtic Sanctuary - was designed by 28-year-old Ms Mary Reynolds and is her first entry in the prestigious competition.

Her show garden was inspired by the Wicklow countryside and Irish mythology. The elemental design includes a circular stone moon gate arching over a pre-Roman-style split path bough planted with daisies, primroses, cowslips and speedwell.

An inner circle combines fire, water and air and the whole garden is enclosed by a dry stone wall built from Wicklow granite.

The wall contains native Irish plants like pennywort, yarrow, thrift, heart's tongue fern, maiden hair spleenwort and wild strawberry.

The garden, which is sponsored by a range of Irish companies, will be moved to the Louis and Zellie Martin Foundation Hospice in Blackrock, Co Dublin, after the show.
