An Irish tourist has been killed following a bus crash near Peru's Machu Picchu Inca ruins today

An Irish tourist has been killed following a bus crash near Peru's Machu Picchu Inca ruins today. There are unconfirmed reports that another Irishman was among 43 people injured in the crash.

Five Peruvians also died after the  bus plunged into a gorge near Cuzco.

At least 43 people including tourists from Britain, France and Israel were injured, police said. The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed to ireland.comthat an Irishman had been killed in the bus accident and said it was providing consular assistant to the man's family.

The bus was traveling to the tourist city of Cuzco, gateway to Peru's Machu Picchu Inca ruins, from near the Bolivian border, when the driver lost control of the vehicle on a bridge in a steep river valley.

At least 37 people died in July when two Peruvian buses crashed head-on in thick fog in the town of Palpa, south of the capital, Lima. Another 30 people died at the start of August in a bus crash in the central Andes.
