Arthur Beesley, The Irish Times’s Brussels Correspondent, has been commended in this year’s Reporting Europe awards, run jointly by Thomson Reuters, the news agency, and the University Association for Contemporary European Studies, the UK-based academic association for contemporary European studies.
Beesley was shortlisted for his detailed reconstruction, Dark Days: behind the bailout, which was published in November 2011 on the anniversary of the IMF-ECB financial rescue of Ireland.
The judges said Beesley’s article “showcases in-depth reporting, scrupulous objectivity and a penetrating grasp of the complex dynamics of EU decision-making. His article deserves to be seen as standard-setting.”
First prize went to reporters Jane Beresford and Allan Little of the BBC for their Radio 4 series Europe’s Choice, which aired in February 2012.
Other commendations went to Quentin Peel of the Financial Times, David Rennie of the Economist and to Graeme Wearden of the Guardian.
