Plans for the people of Ireland to bombard Downing Street and St James's Palace with protest postcards as part of a campaign to shut the Sellafield nuclear power site were unveiled today.

Campaigners want to send one-and-a-half million postcards to homes in the Republic urging people to send them on across the Irish Sea.

The protest organisers are still seeking cash from the Government and businesses for the mass postcard protest to be able to proceed. But it has already won the support of the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern, and Ali Hewson - wife of U2 frontman Bono.

A scheme spokesman said: "We are working on trying to establish the campaign which still depends on us being able to pay for it, but we hope it will be up and running soon.

"The idea is that the cards will be delivered to homes in the Republic and people will be urged to send them on to Tony Blair and Prince Charles, as well as to Sellafield itself," he said.

Under provisional plans, one postcard will show a close-up of a human eye, urging Mr Blair to "look me in the eye" and promise Sellafield is safe.

Another card, set to be addressed to St James's Palace, will show an image of Ireland suffering the fallout of a nuclear disaster at the plant.

An Post confirmed that it would drop the postcards through 1.3 million homes in the Republic for people to forward to Britain. Supermarkets and banks will be asked to sell the cards to customers for one euro.
